Should I bother with a blog?

There's a rumour going around that the era of the website blog is dead: apparently, nobody writes them anymore, and certainly nobody reads them. I was asked by a potential client why they should make the time and effort to even bother to write a blog.

Let's dispel the myth right now and state for the record that blogs are an ESSENTIAL part of a business marketing toolkit. You only have to look up the latest statistics on the internet to see that, apparently:

  • Approximately 7.5 million new blog posts are published globally every day
  • Over 2.7 billion articles are added to the internet per year, on a worldwide scale
  • Around 70 million new posts are published monthly, just on WordPress

Those are frankly eye-watering statistics, but if you're still not convinced as to why you should be creating a regular blog on your website, wonder no more! Here are my top reasons:

A ready-made SEO boost

A regularly updated blog will help your internet search visibility. When you upload regular articles and fresh content, search engines will recognise that your website is active and it will be boosted in search results. This will drive more traffic to your website.

Establish yourself as the go-to expert in your field

Potential customers want to know what you do. When they land on your website, a well-written blog is a great way to draw people in. If you sound like an expert in your field, they’re more likely to contact you over and above a competitor.

Engage and educate your audience

Blogs are not just there to sell your products and services; you can also keep existing clients and customers updated with industry or organisational developments. That’s useful! Educational content will engage visitors, answer their questions, and help them make an informed decision about buying from you.

Supercharge your marketing

You can repurpose blog content for your social media channels. Whether it’s tweaking the whole thing for a LinkedIn article, chopping little soundbites out for social media posts or even using it as a script to create videos, don’t reinvent the wheel! Cleverly used material can halve the time that you spend on creating content.

Teamwork makes the dream work

If there is someone you particularly want to work with or admire for their content, ask them to write a guest blog for your website. Perhaps they will return the favour. Also, you may end up working with them as a result!

Community building

Blogs are a great way to start conversations and build a community around your brand. These people are more likely to become repeat customers and brand champions.

Let your personality shine

If your website is a bit dry, maybe a bit corporate, your blog is the place to show who you really are. People love to know the story behind a business, and what makes people tick. This is your cue to run with that!

Collect valuable data and insight

If people are visiting your website, they're already interested in what you do, and it's a great opportunity to collect warm data. Include a lead magnet in a blog post, or a newsletter sign-up link - don't let people leave without taking action.
